Plane Crashes Over Time

Planes have been around for almost 120 years. It is not a surprise that as aviation has evolved, so too have trends in their crashes. There are also interesting trends within the 12 months of the year, as well as within only the 24 hours of the day.

Plane Crashes Per Year

(Note: 1920 includes all years previous, starting at 1908)

Insight: It takes until roughly after WWII (1945) for there to be large numbers of crashes in continents other than Europe and North America

Insight: Plane Crashes have dramatically decreased in the last 20 years, after almost 6 decades of a relatively constant level of crashes.

Plane Crashes Per Month

Insight: There is a noticable uptick of crashes around the winter months -- during the holidays, as more people are likely to be flying to celebrate or see family.

Plane Crashes Per 24 Hours

Note: When hovering over data, the time is in a 24 hour format (0001 is 12:01 am, 1400 is 2 pm, etc.)

Insight: There are many fewer plane crashes late at night or early in the morning. There are also spikes on the hour, which could correspond to either more planes landing or taking off on the hour, or more people rounding the times that planes have crashed
